The taxi model that can, indeed, be called the ‘Taxi of Tomorrow’ is a practical version of the ‘Back to the Future’ time traveller car model. Kimberly Yau and Michael Lubrano have modified the Ford model that appeared in the 80’s Hollywood movie into a New York cab.
The car that can be called legendary has been appropriately adopted by the Kimberly and Michael to give a new meaning to the term ‘Taxi of Tomorrow’, which has become sensational news in the state.
The fundamental model of the car remains the same so that it can be related to the movie without doubts. It quite naturally does not practically become a taxi as the main motive of taxis cannot be fulfilled. Yes, the sports car has been transformed into a taxi of tomorrow but its capacity to carry passengers remains the same, i.e., one apart from the driver. However, it does fit into the concept of ‘taxi of tomorrow’ even though it fails to actually become the taxi of New York.
The durability of DeLoreans still seems up to the requirement. Besides, a manufacturer of replacement parts for the car holds the official right of manufacturing DeLoreans’ parts. This means that unlike the Nissan NV 200, DeLoreans’ parts would be locally available. In addition to that, the incorporation of flux capacitor to the car fulfil the requirement of a Hybrid vehicle.
Therefore, while the features of DeLoreans have been modified to meet the requirements of New York roads, its external designs, seats, etc. remain futuristic. Thus, the combination conceptually makes the modified version of the car appropriate to be called ‘Taxi of Tomorrow’.
An interesting time-based fact about this modification is that it was done Kimberly and Michael for the entry to a promotional event that was sponsored by Nooka. It is a fashion agency that specialises in futuristic designs from 1980s. Though this event took place in 2010, it became co-incidentally viral at the internet at the time when Nissan NV 200 is at the centre of news. In fact, it is being teasingly touted as the ‘Taxi of Tomorrow’ against the monopolisation of NV 200 as New York’s official and only Taxi model.
In 2012, the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission and the mayor of New York announced that Nissan NV 200 shall be mandatorily made the official taxi of New York. To, this the committee for Taxi Safety and Taxi Fleet Management has filed a lawsuit suing both the commissioner and the mayor.
Their claim also states that the model has been passed to monopolise New York without any test that proves the model’s credibility as a taxi. Besides, the model is also being said to be substandard compared to regular models that ply as taxis in the New York.
On the other hand, Nissan is leaving no stone unturned towards making its model suitable for the roads and challenges of New York. However, to render the result of this lawsuit insignificant, Kimberly and Michael had already developed their version of ‘the Taxi of Tomorrow’.
